We have been lucky enough to cross paths with some amazingly inspiring and super clever people, including the beautiful Nicola from The Unrefined.
Nicola has let us in on some of her top health and beauty tips and shares with us all the importance of living a healthy and happy lifestyle.
We have LOVED watching your journey on Instagram, what inspired you to follow the full fat lifestyle path?'
Thank you! To be completely honest, studying nutrition and recovering from an eating disorder was what inspired me to follow the full fat lifestyle blogger path! I suffered from severe binge eating disorder/bulimia and anorexia for seven years (was MAJORLY scared of any type of fat) and had to defer my journalism degree while I recovered. Half way through recovery I decided to completely change my degree and enrol myself in a Bachelor of Health Science (Nutritional Medicine). Once I learned what I was doing to my body, that our cells are essentially made of fat and cholesterol and our body is like a car that needs good fuel AKA good, wholesome food, I made a hasty recovery! From that point onwards I have had a massive interest in nutrition, helping other women with their body image and breaking the fear of fat which I feel is still heavily instilled in society.
What are your top 5 tips for leading a healthy lifestyle?
#1 Eat a diet rich in healthy fat and protein
Honestly, when you fill your body with the right food and nutrients, you’ll be surprised how much your body thanks you for it. I try to eat as many vegetables as possible with each meal and fill myself with healthy protein and fats… When I need a snack I turn to my granola ;) (low in sugar and high in healthy fats and protein).
#2 Cut out refined sugar
Trust me, i’ve done the research. Not only does it mess with your energy levels, skin and hormones, it also contributes to weight gain.
#3 Drink water
I’m not the biggest fan of drinking water but I notice a massive difference in my skin if I don’t drink enough. I put ginger in my water bottle and sip on it all day!
#4 Find an exercise regime that you love
One thing i’ve learned over the years is you can’t force your body to do something it doesn’t want to do. I love running, boxing and Barre Classes so swap between all three workouts every week, depending on how i’m feeling. This week I’ve been sick (for the first time in a year) so decided to stop all exercise and give my body a big break, feels unusual but very good to recharge. I think it’s really important to listen to your body.
#5 Treat yourself
I know everyone says it, but seriously! I made my partner stop somewhere on the way home for dinner last night because I had the biggest craving for chocolate. I always allow myself what my body craves (in moderation) and it really does stop you from bingeing! As someone who has suffered from Binge Eating Disorder I know the detriment in restricting yourself, it isn’t healthy and is completely natural to allow yourself a treat every now and then. As long as you eat healthy 80% of the time, you’re body will forgive you.
What are your top tips for keeping your skin healthy when out and about in the sun?
Most definitely Kibi Raw Minerals and Ella Bache zinc. I use Kibi Raw Mineral powder as base (it has a high SPF and is water resistant) and layer Ella Bache around my cheeks and lips (where I am prone to pigmentation if exposed to sun). I also use a skin oil at night and B5 serum to ensure my skin stays hydrated and plump!
If you had a Laine Bikini, a one way ticket and your “The Unrefined Granola” where would you go and why?
I’d probably go to the Maldives. Do I really need to tell you why? ;) - Islands, reef and lots of fish (my idea of heaven).
We have followed your health blog and instagram and you spread amazing healthy vibes, but when you do sneak a treat what is your guilty pleasure?
Definitely dark chocolate, dates or Raw Snickers Slice … When i’m having super cravings for chocolate I make a cacao, vanilla, banana and avocado mousse….it is A-MAZING
